Supervision of the use of genetically modified organisms in Finland

The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira), the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira) are responsible for the supervision of the Gene Technology Act in practice.

The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health supervises the contained use of GMOs and in health matters also the deliberate releases. The Finnish Environment Institute supervises the deliberate releases in environmental matters, and the Finnish Food Safety Agency supervises the deliberate releases in matters concerning agriculture and forestry.

The Board for Gene Technology leads and coordinates the supervision. As necessary, the Board also orders which authority is competent in a matter related to deliberate releases. The inspection procedures under the Gene Technology Act are provided in the Decree 198/2007 of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
